To zip through the labor-intensive work of shredding up stumps in the yard, Toro has a prototype of a larger dedicated stump grinder in the works.

Toro is adding to its line of tree care equipment with the unveiling of the new STX-38 stump grinder. The prototype was on display at The Rental Show, held Feb-6-8 in New Orleans. The STX-38 is scheduled to hit the rental market in the second half of 2012, and industry experts say it’s being well-received.

The idea was born two years ago when Toro redefined stump grinding by introducing the STX-26. Although it has yet to make its formal debut on the market, the STX-38 is already creating a buzz of excitement.

“The positive feedback has exceeded our expectations,” said Greg Lawrence, marketing product manager for Toro’s compact utility equipment. “Professionals in the rental, landscaping and arborist markets have asked us to develop a new grinder that can provide even more productivity, which is why we are developing the new STX-38 model. This unit will deliver more horsepower to make quick work of larger stumps.”

The soon-to-be-released grinder is modeled after its predecessor, the 26-horsepower STX-26, designed to take the toil out of stump grinding. The STX-26 features include easy to use controls, track drive to increase stability on hillsides, and Toro’s exclusive traction control system. Transport speeds can top 4 mph, so you can get the job done faster.

Toro’s TX models are easier to use than others on the market because of the TX-style controls and tracks for superior maneuverability and quicker transfer speeds. The STX also helps reduce maintenance expenses because it features a hydraulically-driven head, eliminating the need to replace belts. The STX-38 will get the job done with less effort and sweat because of its extra horsepower for increased efficiency.

Sixteen different contractors from across the country have testified to how well their Grasshopper mowers take care of grounds maintenance. Karl Goertzen, co-owner of Oasis Planteriors Inc. in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, said when he first tried a Grasshopper mower for his business, he loved it.

The 600 Series can zip along at up to 8.5 mph and cut 4.02 acres in an hour. Its options include a wide seat conversion kit, extended steering levers, dual-forktail wheels or wide stance single-forktail wheels and a full flotation deck feature. It also features a mulching package, QuikConverter brand implement capability and PowerVac brand collection systems to scoop up grass and yard clippings.

Stihl’s MS 391 chainsaw is a mid-range gas-powered machine that is often used for home and business purposes, such as cutting firewood. Since it is a popular model for many different applications, Stihl wants to make sure that its flywheel defect is fixed promptly. Currently, no consumers have been injured by this issue.

The flywheel itself is part of the chainsaw’s combustible engine mechanics; it is essentially a wheel with a specific weight attached to it. This weighted disk provides acceleration and deceleration to the crankshaft and piston so that engine speed is smooth and controlled. However, Stihl’s recalled flywheel can crack unexpectedly. As a result, internal parts can become separated from the machine and injury nearby people. The fast speeds of the engine provide enough momentum to fling parts in a relatively damaging pattern. Any consumer that does not follow the recall guidelines can be possibly injured.

Any consumers that identify their chainsaw as a MS 391 should then verify the serial number. On the rear of the saw is a square casing that houses the muffler; the serial number is engraved on the crankcase that is beside the muffler. The affected serial numbers are: 28535 1759 to 28535 1956, 28664 5278 to 28664 6277, 28665 1283 to 28665 5577, 28724 4317 to 28724 4480, and 28735 3627 to 28735 3647.

Another form of identification is the dates of purchase; the affected Stihl MS 391 serial numbers were sold in 2011 between the months of March and July. Since they are relatively expensive within the mid-range Stihl chainsaw family, many consumers usually keep receipts of the purchase for warranty reasons.

Stihl recommends that consumers stop using the affected serial numbers and immediately bring them to a local dealer. If a local dealer is too far from the consumer, he or she should call Stihl directly so that other arrangements can be made. Consumers can even email them if necessary with any questions. However, local dealers, like us, are here to serve the community to ensure safe use of all power equipment. Additionally, Stihl wants to make sure that all serial numbers affected are serviced as soon as possible with the least amount of downtime.

When consumers bring the chainsaws in for service, they will receive a brand new flywheel installation at no charge. By using the dealer’s warranty option, consumers will know that their chainsaws will work safely. Stihl does not recommend that consumers replace the flywheel on their own; a non-factory approved flywheel may not match the intricate design of the Stihl brand. As a result, consumers should allow factory trained personnel to service their power equipment.

For pocket money, he cut private yards, churchyards, cemeteries and even parts of a multi-acre estate. He used mostly simple reel push mowers for small yards and self-propelled reel mowers or small push rotary mowers for larger jobs.As a teenager and college student he worked on a golf course for summers using everything from a riding mower with a gang of four reel mowers, a small tractor pulling tandem reels or a very rudimentary mid-mount rear engine riding rotary mower for grounds keeping around greens, bunkers and the club house area.

Years later after marriage and a couple of small homes and medium sized lots requiring an hours mowing with a simple rotary mower, they purchased a 5-acre piece of property in New England and built their proverbial dream home. Initially about 2 acres were devoted to the lawn and gardens that included ornamentals and flowers for his wife and a vegetable patch for him.

Initially he purchased a John Deere 42” 17.5 hp gasoline powered model to mow this area. This tractor had about an 8 ft turning radius and a rigid deck with difficult to change minimal height adjustments often resulting in scalping cuts on his hilly property. Additionally, almost as much time trimming afterward was required as that necessary for using the mower.

In essence, during the prime growing seasons most of his weekend became devoted to lawn maintenance and became an onerous chore interfering with their kids’ sports and other weekend pursuits. As a result, he finally decided to hire a professional lawn maintenance company to mow the lawn.

One contractor used a Grasshopper front mount mower and he was impressed with the efficiency and manicured look of the lawn. His main equipment for Stephen’s property was a Grasshopper 725DT with 3-cylinder, Kubota MaxTorque™ diesel engine a 52” deck but he also said he used a 72” deck for his larger commercial jobs.

The PowerVac™ attachments keep the turf healthy and take care of leaf and debris removal in the fall. The PowerFold deck design option provides the ability to regularly sharpen blades and perform routine deck maintenance. Finally, the Grasshopper Front Mount models allow for all season attachments such as a de-thatcher, sweeper brush, snow blower, plow and more.

Eventually, as time went on, his acreage grew to nearly 5 acres of lawn, gardens and paths. At the same time their children moved on and he determined that he would like to cut the lawn so he investigated the full line of Grasshopper Mowers.
